If you are considering buying a 4x4 you had better not have a guilty conscience because, like it or loathe it, 4x4 do love to drink up natural resources.Economy isn't the prime reason for buying an off-roader, but if you hunt around there are some high fuel-economy figures out there. A hybrid or a diesel is the most sensible choice.
